The mountainous terrain of Himachal Pradesh has been home to human settlements since ancient times, witnessing multiple waves of migration from surrounding regions. Over centuries, it was ruled by local kingdoms, some of which came under the influence of larger empires.

Before India’s independence, Himachal was part of the Punjab Province under British rule. After independence, it was reorganized as the Chief Commissioner’s Province of Himachal Pradesh, later becoming a union territory. In 1966, several hilly regions from Punjab were merged into Himachal, and in 1971, it attained full statehood, emerging as a distinct and culturally rich state of India.
